Duration changes the nutrition problem because small mismatches accumulate. Carbohydrate becomes increasingly relevant when endurance exercise is both prolonged and demanding because it supports the ability to sustain useful training intensity. That does not mean every endurance session should be fuelled in exactly the same way. The athlete’s session purpose, duration, intensity and starting food intake change how much carbohydrate support is useful.
Race-specific training also has a second purpose: it gives the athlete a chance to test how a planned fuel strategy behaves at realistic pace. A strategy that looks sensible on paper is not yet a race strategy if the athlete has never tested its practicality or tolerance during comparable work.
Carbohydrate loading is an event strategy, not an everyday habit
Carbohydrate loading can be useful before selected prolonged events where maximising stored carbohydrate is relevant. It is not simply “eating extra” before any long run, and it does not need to be reproduced before routine training. The event, expected duration, taper, usual eating pattern and gastrointestinal tolerance all influence whether a loading strategy is appropriate.

Endurance athletes can experience nausea, fullness, cramping or an urgent need to use the toilet during prolonged exercise, and the same athlete may tolerate foods differently at easy pace and race pace. Prolonged-activity hydration is a practical balance between sweat losses, weather, pace, access to fluid and what the stomach can comfortably handle. Course design matters. A runner may depend on aid stations, a cyclist may carry bottles and refill them, and a triathlete has to manage fluid opportunities across more than one discipline. Here, “superfood” is simply a convenient label for familiar foods with useful nutritional characteristics. These examples can fit an endurance eating pattern, but they do not form a race menu or a list that every athlete needs.
- Idli: provides carbohydrate in a familiar, relatively low-fat preparation; individual tolerance still determines when it is useful.
- Idiyappam or string hoppers: is a rice-based regional staple that can contribute carbohydrate without depending on packaged sports foods.
- Tapioca or cassava (kappa): is a starchy root common in parts of South India that can contribute substantial carbohydrate in a familiar regional form.
- Chikoo or sapota: offers carbohydrate in a soft, familiar fruit form and can add seasonal variety when it suits the athlete’s digestive comfort.

Yes. A first-time marathoner may still be learning what the stomach tolerates, how aid stations fit the race plan and how the body responds late in long training.
